Drying laundry in the apartment:
This is how to do it correctly

As soon as it gets wet, cold and uncomfortable outside, many people face a problem: their laundry can no longer dry outside. As a result, laundry must be dried in the apartment unless separate drying rooms are available. However, there is then a risk that the humidity in the apartment will become too high. In this case there is even a risk of mold that is dangerous to health. We'll show you how to dry your laundry properly.

How do I dry laundry properly in the apartment?

If possible, place your clothes horse where it will least disturb you in your everyday life. The laundry should also dry in a warm place and not, for example, in a cold bedroom. Because only warm air absorbs enough moisture. You can then move the moisture outside by ventilating the room several times. Meanwhile, you should briefly turn off the heating while drying your laundry. If you have the opportunity, ensure there is a draft by ventilating rooms at the same time. This means that the moisture gets out even better. This is how you dry your laundry in your apartment really effectively.

Tip: If possible, buy a second or third drying rack. This way you can distribute the wet laundry across several rooms. Here you can find out how to wash your laundry properly.

Why can drying laundry in the apartment generally become a problem?

Especially if you dry your laundry in a small apartment, drying your laundry incorrectly can have unpleasant consequences. If you hang your damp laundry to dry in the heated living room, the warm air in the apartment absorbs the evaporated water from the laundry. This causes the humidity to rise. If the warm, moist air hits cold surfaces, especially windows and balcony doors, it condenses. The resulting water droplets can create mold on the walls.

What temperature when drying clothes in the apartment?

To dry your laundry properly in the apartment, you should hang it up in a room with the highest possible room temperature of around 20 °C. On the other hand, an unheated room is unsuitable. At temperatures below 10 °C, the air hardly absorbs any moisture. All the water that evaporates from the laundry then ends up on walls and windows, almost unfiltered.

Ventilate properly and dry laundry

If you want or need to dry your laundry in the apartment and don't have a balcony, there should be at least one window in the room. Air circulation ensures that moisture escapes from the laundry as quickly as possible. So make sure there is a draft. You can create this by opening two or more windows at the same time. Ideally, these windows are directly opposite each other so that air can flow through unhindered.

Finding a solution with the landlord: drying rack in the basement or garden?

Despite regular ventilation and heating, you can't cope with drying in your apartment and regularly measure humidity levels of 55 to 60 percent? Then you should contact your landlord. Maybe you can find a common solution, such as setting up a drying room in the basement or purchasing an electric tumble dryer for the community.
