Washing your hair without shampoo: Back to nature

Washing your hair without shampoo? What sounds strange at first has become a real trend. Known as the no-poo method, doing away with conventional shampoos and conditioners is causing a stir worldwide. Natural home remedies such as baking soda or flour are used as shampoo substitutes—the goal is to wash your hair as naturally as possible. But does it really work?

No Poo – Goodbye, shampoo!

Washing your hair without shampoo is like taking a bath without bubble bath? For a long time, liquid shampoos were considered the gold standard of modern hair care. But with the shift towards more sustainable lifestyles, demand grew for effective alternatives to industrially manufactured shampoos and other hair care products. Solid shampoo and hair soap in handy bar form quickly became the go-to shampoo replacement. However, one question remained unanswered: what if you stopped using shampoo altogether?

Cleaning your hair without shampoo does not mean that you simply throw your usual hygiene standards out the window. The no-poo method seeks new answers that are more in line with the responsible use of natural resources than the use of shampoo in conventional plastic bottles. Find out how to best implement the no-poo hair trend here!

Possible shampoo alternatives

Even though the no-poo method primarily involves washing your hair with purely natural products or even just water, there are also shampoo alternatives available to replace your regular shampoo. You can wash your hair with soap, for example. While specially formulated hair soaps are enriched with nourishing oils, conventional curd soap is oil- and grease-free. So if you tend to have oily hair, you can definitely benefit from using classic soap.

In addition, fashionable hairstyles such as short pixie cuts or elaborate updos are easier to achieve if the hair is not too smooth but has a nice texture. You can achieve exactly this effect with the no-shampoo principle.

No Poo – How can you wash your hair without shampoo?

If you want to make your own shampoo substitute, you can use natural ingredients such as baking soda, flour, apple cider vinegar, healing clay, or lava clay.

Even if your hair roots initially become greasy more quickly than when using shampoo, with a little patience, you can often achieve good results after a while.

The water-only method is also part of the no-poo method. As the name suggests, this method involves washing your hair with water only. Unlike when using shampoo or natural home remedies, this method does not remove all of the sebum from the scalp. You can then distribute this throughout your hair using a natural fiber brush. The sebum forms a protective film for your hair. However, especially at the beginning, the hair often looks greasy and it can take months for sebum production to reduce.

If you don't want to wash your hair with water anymore, you should still remove coarse dirt regularly. A natural fiber brush is also suitable for this.

If the cleansing effect is not sufficient when you stop using shampoo, or if your scalp itches or flakes, you should discuss this with a dermatologist or your trusted hairdresser if necessary. In this case, your hair may benefit more from mild care shampoos. In any case, you will need a lot of patience with the no-poo method. It often takes several weeks or even months for the hair to adjust.

Low-poo method – the ideal middle ground?

Blow-drying on the highest setting, straightening, or styling can really damage your hair in the long run and irritate your scalp. So what could be more obvious than taking it down a notch? By completely avoiding shampoo, your scalp will hopefully regain its balance.

If you have a sensitive, dry scalp, you don't have to give up shampoo completely. Instead, you can gradually reduce the amount of shampoo you use, also known as the low-poo method. This often calms the scalp quickly and saves you from having to try out new hair washing trends.
