Removing odors from clothing Here's how to do it

Clothes should smell fresh so that we feel comfortable wearing them. However, sometimes a normal wash cycle is not enough to remove unpleasant odors from clothing - especially when the bad-smelling molecules have become embedded in the fabric. We present the most effective methods for removing musty closet odors and annoying sweat smells from difficult-to-wash textiles and other items of clothing.

Removing odors from clothing with household remedies

There are numerous products available in stores to combat odors in textiles. However, there are also some home remedies made from natural ingredients that can successfully neutralize odors in your clothing without damaging the fabric.

1. Fresh or hot air

Fresh air is always good for removing odors from clothing. Leaving it on the balcony overnight usually works wonders. Hot air has a similar effect: simply blow the odor out with a hair dryer or place the garment on the turned-up heater.

2. Steam bath

A steam bath has a similar effect to hot or fresh air. Hang the garment in the shower and turn the hot water on full to create steam. This method works in a similar way to a steam iron. After steaming, you can also remove creases by patting the garment with your hands.

3. Cold

Cold temperatures are also a great way to remove bad odors from clothing. To do this, place the garment in a sealable freezer bag and put it in the freezer for a few hours. Then rinse the garment with water and dry it in the fresh air.

Is the washing machine responsible for odors in clothing?

Bacteria and dirt inside the machine can cause laundry to smell bad. To prevent and remove biofilms in the residual water of the washing machine, we recommend that you wash your laundry at regular intervals, about once or twice a month in a normal household, at higher temperatures (e.g. 60 degrees) with a powdered heavy-duty detergent containing bleach (e.g. Persil Universal Powder or Persil Universal Megaperls).

The reason for the deposits is the energy-saving programs that are common today, which almost exclusively wash at low temperatures. This saves electricity, but has the consequence that grease and dirt are deposited in the washing machine because they are no longer properly dissolved and removed. If the detergent dosage is insufficient and low-temperature washing programs and bleach-free detergents are used predominantly, layers of slime consisting of dirt residues, bacteria, and fungi can form in the washing machine. These accumulate over a longer period of time and can cause unpleasant odors in washing machines and even on freshly washed laundry.

Remove odors from clothing by washing correctly
One of the key factors in preventing odors from developing in clothing in the first place is the washing time. You should therefore avoid using short wash cycles if possible. The washing time should be long enough to remove limescale, bacteria, and dirt from the washing machine.

Tip: You can use Perwoll Renew Sport to combat sweat odors in sports and functional clothing. The advanced formula cleans the clothing, neutralizes odors, and maintains the membrane function.

Eliminating odors from wardrobes and dressers

Antique pieces of furniture are nice to look at, but they can have the drawback of sometimes smelling unpleasant. This odor can then transfer to freshly washed clothing. Old wood absorbs moisture, which subsequently causes a musty smell. However, there are a few methods to make it disappear.

You can also use vinegar for this purpose. This household remedy removes odors and disinfects when wiping the furniture. Special liquid soaps for wooden furniture have a similar positive effect, although several applications are required to achieve real results. Restorers remove odors from antique furniture using a combination of straw and clay, with the clay binding the odors.

You can also create a pleasant fragrance using vanilla scent, coffee, or soap fragrances. Simply place them inside the piece of furniture and let them work. Another long-established remedy against odors is lavender - either in the form of a scented sachet or as an essential oil. Give it a try! Don’t give odors in your clothing a chance!
